BAC Testing Explained: What the Reading Means and Why It Holds Up

On Monday morning an HR manager at a Bhiwandi warehouse opens an email from a loader who was sent home on Saturday night. The gate device showed 0.03. He says he had used mouthwash twenty minutes earlier, that nobody waited before testing him, and that he wants the day's wages back. Three people in the room have seen the number. Not one of them can explain what it represents.

That gap is the real problem. BAC testing is now routine at factory gates, mine boom barriers, transport yards and event entrances across India, but the number it produces is often treated as self-evident. It is not. It is a measurement with units, assumptions, timing effects and failure modes, and anyone who signs off on a result should be able to say out loud what it means.

What BAC Testing Actually Measures

BAC stands for blood alcohol concentration: how much ethanol is present in a given volume of blood. In India it is usually written in milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. The Motor Vehicles Act sets the driving limit at 30 mg per 100 ml, which is the same quantity you will see written as 0.03% BAC or 0.03 g/dL on an imported device.

A breath analyser does not touch blood. It measures alcohol in deep lung air, which is called breath alcohol concentration, and converts it using a fixed blood-to-breath ratio built into the instrument. The conversion is well established and is what allows a roadside or gate reading to be expressed in familiar BAC units.

This matters for two practical reasons. First, a breath result is an estimate of blood concentration, not a direct measurement of it. Second, because the conversion is fixed, anything that puts alcohol into the mouth rather than the lungs will distort the answer. Before you write a workplace limit into policy, confirm which unit your device displays. A policy that says "0.03" against a device reporting mg/L is a policy nobody can apply.

Why the Same Person Tests Differently an Hour Apart

Alcohol does not appear in the blood the moment it is swallowed and it does not leave all at once. It is absorbed through the stomach and small intestine, rises to a peak, then falls steadily as the liver clears it.

So a person tested while alcohol is still being absorbed may read lower than they will twenty minutes later. Someone tested hours after drinking stopped is on the falling side of the curve and will read lower each time. Food, body mass and how quickly the drinks were consumed all shift the shape of that curve.

The operational consequence is simple: a BAC result describes a moment, not a night. It tells you the state of the person standing in front of you when the sample was given. It also explains why "I stopped drinking at midnight" is not a defence at a 6 am shift start. Clearance is slow and steady, and no amount of tea, cold water or sleep speeds it up.

Mouth Alcohol: The Most Common Reason a Reading Gets Challenged

The loader in Bhiwandi may actually have a point, and it has nothing to do with whether he was drinking.

Mouthwash, some cough syrups, breath sprays, certain pan masala preparations and a recent sip of anything alcoholic leave residue in the mouth and throat. That residue is far more concentrated than lung air. Blow immediately after and the device reports a number that reflects the mouth, not the bloodstream.

The fix is a waiting period. Fifteen minutes with nothing taken by mouth, no smoking and no vomiting, then test. If the first reading was inflated by residue, the second will be dramatically lower. If the person has actually been drinking, the second reading will be close to the first.

Build the wait into the procedure rather than leaving it to the operator's judgement. Sensor Type Decides How Much the Number Is Worth

Two sensor technologies dominate the Indian market, and they are not interchangeable.

Semiconductor sensors use a heated metal-oxide element. They are inexpensive and detect alcohol reliably at higher concentrations, but they also respond to other substances in breath and drift over time. They are appropriate for personal awareness and for a rough first pass where a positive simply triggers a proper test.

Fuel cell sensors oxidise ethanol electrochemically and produce a current proportional to alcohol present. They are specific to ethanol, far more stable across repeated tests, and they are what you want if a reading is going to end in someone being stood down, sent home or reported to a client.

Screening Versus Confirmation

It helps to separate two jobs that BAC testing is asked to do.

• Screening is fast, high volume and answers one question: is this person fit to start work? A passive or mouthpiece screener at the gate, one breath, a pass or a flag.

• Confirmation happens after a flag. It is a second test on a calibrated evidential-grade device, conducted in private, witnessed, with the reading printed or logged and signed.

Some employers assume confirmation must always go to an outside laboratory. For alcohol, that is rarely practical, because the reading falls while the sample is in transit. Calibration: The Quiet Failure

A fuel cell sensor drifts with use. Without periodic calibration against a certified reference gas or wet bath standard, a device slowly stops telling the truth, usually by under-reading.

That under-reading is the dangerous direction. An over-reading gets challenged and discovered. An under-reading passes people who should have been stopped, silently, for months.

Treat calibration as a scheduled maintenance item with a certificate, an interval set by the manufacturer, and a named owner. If a result is ever questioned, the first document anyone will ask for is the calibration record covering the date of the test.

Setting the Limit Your Site Will Actually Enforce

India has no single workplace BAC limit. The 30 mg/100 ml figure applies to driving, and many operators adopt it because it is familiar and defensible.

High-hazard environments usually go further. Mines, chemical plants, height work, confined spaces and heavy vehicle operations commonly run zero tolerance, expressed as any detectable alcohol. That is easier to explain and easier to apply consistently, and it removes arguments about whether 0.02 is acceptable at a crane control.

Whichever you choose, write it down: the limit, the units, the device used, the waiting period, the retest rule, the consequence, and who decides. A policy that exists only in a supervisor's head is not a policy.

Choosing the Device for Your Volume

The throughput question decides the hardware more than anything else.
