Breathalyzer Test vs Other Alcohol Tests: What Each One Proves

Safety Division, AlcoBreath · 14 September 2026 · 8 min read

A warehouse supervisor in Bhiwandi is two weeks into a new zero-tolerance rule. A loader walks in at the start of the general shift smelling of alcohol, denies it, and asks to be tested. There is no device at the gate, because the purchase request is still sitting with accounts. So the supervisor downloads something called a drunk test from the app store, hands over his phone, and writes the result in the register.

That register entry is worthless. Worse, it is now the only document that exists about a serious incident, and it says the worker passed.

A breathalyzer test is one specific thing: a measurement of alcohol in a deep-lung breath sample, taken by an instrument with a sensor, at a known time. Everything else people call an alcoholic test, from a blood draw to an EtG urine panel to a reaction-time game on a phone, answers a different question. Knowing which question you actually need answered is what separates a screening programme that holds up from one that collapses the first time somebody disputes it.

What a breathalyzer test actually measures

A breath analyzer test does not read alcohol in your mouth, your stomach or your bloodstream directly. It reads alcohol vapour in air that has come from the alveoli, deep in the lungs, where breath has been in contact with blood long enough to reach equilibrium.

The instrument converts that vapour concentration into a blood alcohol equivalent. In India that is usually displayed as mg per 100 ml of blood, matching the language of Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, where the driving limit is 30 mg per 100 ml. The same figure is sometimes shown as a percentage, so 30 mg/100 ml appears as 0.03% BAC.

Two sensor families do this work. Semiconductor sensors are cheap and fine for a rough pass or fail. Fuel cell sensors respond to ethanol specifically and are the ones you want when a reading will be written down, shown to a union representative, or attached to a termination letter. The detail of how each type behaves is covered in how a breathalyzer test works and what the BAC limits are in India.

What a breath analysis test proves is narrow and useful: this person, at this moment, had this much alcohol in their system. It says nothing about last night, nothing about last week, and nothing about impairment as a medical conclusion.

The tests people confuse with a breathalyzer test

Blood BAC test

A blood alcohol level test measures ethanol in a drawn blood sample in a laboratory. It is the reference standard, and in India it is what a hospital or forensic lab produces when a police case or an insurance claim turns serious.

It is also slow, invasive, and needs a qualified person plus chain-of-custody paperwork. You cannot run one at a factory gate at 6 am. Its role is confirmation after a positive screen or after an accident, not routine checking. The division of labour between the two is set out in what a blood alcohol level test proves and when you need one.

EtG test

An EtG test looks for ethyl glucuronide, a metabolite of alcohol, usually in urine. Because the metabolite lingers well after the alcohol itself has cleared, an EtG test can indicate drinking days earlier.

That makes it a monitoring tool, not a fitness-for-duty tool. It is used in de-addiction programmes, some court-supervised arrangements and abstinence monitoring. If a crane operator returns a positive EtG test, you know he drank recently; you do not know he was unfit when he climbed into the cab. For a workplace decision about this shift, it answers the wrong question, and it takes days to come back.

Urea breath test kit

A urea breath test kit has nothing to do with alcohol at all. It is a medical diagnostic for Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach, done in a clinic with a labelled urea drink. The phrase turns up in the same searches as breath analysis test purely because both involve breathing into something. If a vendor sends you a quote mixing the two, that vendor does not understand what you are buying.

"Breathalyzer test online", sober test apps and drunk test games

There is no such thing as a breathalyzer test online. A web page cannot sample your breath. What these tools actually do is one of three things: estimate BAC from what you tell them you drank, test reaction time or coordination, or run a novelty quiz.

BAC estimators from drink counts are guesses built on averages for weight, sex and time. Real absorption varies with food, fatigue, medication and individual metabolism. A reaction-time sober test can be passed by a practised drinker and failed by a sober person at the end of a double shift.

None of it is evidence. None of it belongs in a register. If a supervisor has a suspicion and no instrument, the correct action is to stand the person down from safety-critical work and escalate, not to substitute a phone for a sensor.

Which test for which decision

Test What it detects Useful window Where it fits

Breathalyzer test Current breath alcohol, reported as BAC Right now Gate screening, post-incident first response, random checks, fleet dispatch

Blood BAC test Ethanol in blood Hours Confirmation, hospital, police case, insurance dispute

EtG test Alcohol metabolite Days Abstinence monitoring, rehabilitation programmes

Urea breath test kit H. pylori bacteria Not applicable Gastroenterology. Not an alcohol test

App or online "drunk test" Nothing measurable None Entertainment

For almost every operational question an Indian employer faces, the answer is a breath test. It is immediate, non-invasive, repeatable in front of the person being tested, and it produces a number rather than an opinion.

Reading the number without over-claiming

A breathalyser test result is a measurement, and measurements need context before anyone acts on them.

Most Indian workplace policies are not built around the 30 mg road limit. Transport operators, mines, refineries and contract sites on client premises usually run at zero tolerance, which means any confirmed reading above the device's detection floor is a positive. What zero actually means on a display, and why a tiny non-zero figure is not automatically a drink, is explained in alcohol breath test normal range.

Mouth alcohol is the most common cause of an inflated first reading. Recent alcohol from mouthwash, a breath freshener, cough syrup, or a drink taken minutes earlier sits in the mouth and is not lung air. A fifteen-minute wait and a second test resolves it, and skipping that wait is the single easiest way to lose an argument later. More on interpretation sits in what a breath test for alcohol limit actually means in India.

What a workable screening policy looks like

The device is the easy part. The policy is what determines whether a positive reading leads to a clean, defensible decision or a six-month dispute.

• Write down who gets tested and when. Random selection, all safety-critical roles pre-shift, everyone after an incident, or on reasonable suspicion. Say it in the policy and apply it the same way every time.

• Name the trained testers. Two people present is better than one.

• Fix the retest rule. Wait fifteen minutes, test again, and record both readings.

• Record every test, including negatives. A register that only contains positives looks selective.

• Define consequences in advance. Stand-down, transport home, disciplinary referral, confirmatory test where relevant.

• Keep calibration current. An uncalibrated instrument is not evidence of anything. Note the calibration date on the record.

The procedural detail, including what to do when a worker refuses, is covered in how to run a breathalyser test that holds up when it is challenged and in the BAC test that holds up: procedure, records and defending a result.

Who carries the consequence

When screening is skipped, the consequence does not land on the person who drank. It lands on the occupier, the safety officer who signed the shift as fit, the transport manager whose driver was on the road, and the client whose site the contractor was working on.

Indian employers already carry a general duty to provide a safe workplace, and client safety questionnaires increasingly ask directly whether alcohol screening is in place and how results are recorded. An honest "no" costs contracts. A dishonest "yes" backed by a phone app costs more.

The concrete next step

If you are the person the purchase request is waiting on, the decision is narrower than it looks. You need a fuel cell breath analyser for anywhere a reading may be contested, enough units that no shift starts without one, a calibration schedule you actually keep, and a one-page tested-and-recorded procedure.

Matching device type to your setting, whether that is a single gate, a multi-shift plant or a dispersed fleet, is walked through in how to choose the right breathalyzer tester for your site or fleet. If you want to be clear first on exactly what your reading will and will not prove, start with what a breathalyser test measures and when to run one.
