Breathalyser Test: What It Measures, What It Proves, and When to Run One

Safety Division, AlcoBreath · 13 September 2026 · 8 min read

The tender documents arrived with a pre-qualification questionnaire attached. Question 14: Describe your alcohol screening procedure at site entry. Attach policy and calibration records. The contracts manager reads it twice, then walks over to the safety lead, because nobody at the company has ever run a breathalyser test on anyone, and "we trust our people" is not an answer that wins a contract.

That is how a lot of Indian organisations arrive at this subject. Not through conviction, but through a client, an insurer, an audit finding, or an incident that could have been worse. The good news is that the underlying test is simple, fast and cheap. The part that needs thought is what the number means and what you do with it.

What a breathalyser test actually measures

A breathalyser test does not measure alcohol in blood. It measures alcohol in the deep-lung air a person exhales, then converts that to an estimated blood alcohol concentration using a fixed breath-to-blood ratio.

The physics behind it is straightforward. Alcohol in the bloodstream passes into the tiny air sacs of the lungs in proportion to how much is circulating. Breathe out hard enough and long enough, and the last portion of that breath carries a reliable signature of what is in the blood.

Two sensor families dominate the market:

• Fuel cell sensors oxidise ethanol and generate a small electrical current proportional to the alcohol present. They are specific to ethanol, hold their accuracy over many tests, and are what workplaces and enforcement bodies use.

• Semiconductor (metal oxide) sensors are cheaper and respond to a wider range of vapours, which makes them useful as a first filter but less dependable as a sole basis for a decision.

If you are buying for a gate, a depot or an event door, the sensor type matters more than the housing or the display. A detailed walkthrough of the technology sits in our guide to how a breathalyzer test works and what accuracy means in practice.

Reading the number: what a BAC level test means in India

Under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the legal threshold for driving in India is 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, which is 0.03% BAC. That is a low bar by global standards. A single drink can put an average adult close to it.

So the first thing to settle internally is which number you are testing against.

Setting Practical threshold Why

Commercial driving, plant, heights, confined space Zero or 0.00 with a confirmatory retest Any impairment is unacceptable; policy sets the bar, not the road law

Private driving 0.03% BAC Statutory limit under the Motor Vehicles Act

Hospitality and event venues Screening on suspicion, plus refusal of keys Duty of care and licence conditions

Campuses and hostels Policy-defined, usually zero Disciplinary rather than legal framework

A workplace is entitled to set a stricter standard than the road law. Most safety-critical Indian employers do. The important thing is that the standard is written down before anyone blows into a device, not improvised afterwards. Our explainer on what a breath test reading means against the alcohol limit covers how to phrase that threshold in a policy.

Screening test, evidential test, lab test: three different jobs

People use "alcoholic test", "sober test" and "drunk test" loosely, which hides an important distinction. A breath analysis test is a screening tool. It answers one question quickly at the point where a decision has to be made.

Test type What it does Typical use

Breath screening (handheld breath analyzer test) Estimates current BAC in seconds Gate entry, pre-shift, random checks, event doors

Evidential breath test Higher-specification instrument, printed record Enforcement, formal disciplinary action

Blood alcohol test Measures alcohol directly in a blood sample Legal proceedings, post-incident, disputed readings

EtG test (urine) Detects ethyl glucuronide, a metabolite Indicates consumption days after breath alcohol has cleared

An EtG test is not a substitute for a BAC test. It tells you that someone drank recently; it does not tell you they are impaired right now. That difference matters when the consequence is dismissal rather than a return-to-work conversation.

When a result is going to be contested, the escalation path runs from breath to blood. We cover that handover in what a blood alcohol level test proves and when you need one and in what the lab measures versus what breath screening already answers.

What quietly corrupts a breathalyser test result

Most disputed readings are not sensor failures. They are procedure failures.

Mouth alcohol. Residual alcohol in the mouth from a recent drink, mouthwash, some cough syrups or a burp can produce a reading far above the person's actual BAC. The fix is a 15 to 20 minute observation window before testing, with nothing consumed in between.

A weak breath sample. Shallow blowing delivers upper-airway air, not deep-lung air. A device that accepts any puff will under-read. Look for one that demands sustained flow and aborts an insufficient sample.

Skipped calibration. Sensors drift. A unit that has not been calibrated on the manufacturer's schedule produces numbers you cannot defend in a disciplinary hearing or an audit. Keep dated calibration certificates with the device, not in someone's email.

No second test. A single positive should always trigger a confirmatory retest after a short interval, on the same device or a second one, with the result and time written down.

Contaminated conditions. Testing beside a fuel bay, in heavy solvent fumes, or immediately after the person has smoked can affect semiconductor units in particular.

The procedural detail that makes a result stand up is set out in how to run a breathalyser test that holds up when challenged and in procedure, records and defending a BAC test result.

Things that are not a breathalyser test

A "breathalyzer test online". Search results promise one. There is no way for a web page or a phone microphone to measure ethanol in exhaled breath. Online calculators estimate BAC from drinks, weight and time. They are educational at best and should never be used to clear someone to drive or to operate machinery.

Coordination checks. Walking a line, touching the nose, reciting something backwards. These are observational aids, not measurements, and they are easily disputed.

A urea breath test kit. This turns up in the same searches and is a completely different clinical test. A urea breath test kit detects Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach using labelled urea. It has nothing to do with alcohol.

Who runs the test, and how

A workable procedure is short enough that a supervisor can follow it at 6 am without a manual.

• Announce the check under a written, communicated policy. No surprise testing without a policy behind it.

• Use a fresh, sealed mouthpiece for each person. This is non-negotiable and it also removes the hygiene objection.

• Observe the 15 to 20 minute wait if there is any chance of mouth alcohol.

• Take the reading. Record name, date, time, device serial number, result and the tester's name.

• On a positive, retest after a short interval. If it confirms, stand the person down immediately and arrange safe transport home.

• Offer escalation to a blood test where the person disputes the result and the consequence is serious.

• File the record. Audits and insurers ask for the trail, not the anecdote.

For transport operators, the exposure runs further than the driver. An organisation that put a vehicle on the road without a check has to explain that decision later, as set out in driving under the influence of alcohol and the employer's exposure.

Choosing the device for your situation

Match the device to the volume and the consequence, not to the brochure.

• High-volume gates and depots: a fuel cell unit with fast recovery between tests, a passive or contactless first-pass mode for queues, and mouthpiece testing for anyone flagged.

• Supervisor carry, site vehicles, security desks: a compact fuel cell handheld with a printer option or data export, so the record does not depend on someone's handwriting.

• Events, hospitality, campus wardens: a simple, rugged unit with a clear display that guests or students can see for themselves, which defuses most arguments on the spot.

• Families: a personal handheld kept in the car, used before anyone drives home from a function. One unit, honestly used, is worth more than a dozen opinions about whether someone is fine to drive.

The decision in front of you

Routine alcohol screening in India is no longer unusual. Clients ask about it in pre-qualification. Insurers ask about it after a claim. Contractors are refused entry at sites that have decided the risk is not theirs to carry.

The question is not whether a breathalyser test is accurate enough. It is whether you would rather find out about a problem at the gate, with a mouthpiece and a written record, or afterwards, with a police report and a client asking what your procedure was.
