Your liver removes alcohol at a fixed speed: roughly one standard drink (about 10 g of alcohol) per hour. Nothing makes it faster. Not coffee, not a cold shower, not food after drinking.
Rough waiting time by drink
| What you drank | Approx. alcohol | Rough time to clear |
|---|---|---|
| 1 small peg (30 ml) | about 10 g | about 1 hour |
| 1 regular beer (330 ml, 5%) | about 13 g | 1 to 1.5 hours |
| 2 large pegs (120 ml) | about 40 g | 4 hours or more |
| 1 strong beer (650 ml, 8%) | about 41 g | 4 hours or more |
| A full evening (4+ large pegs) | 80 g or more | 8 hours or more, often into the next morning |
Count the time from your last drink. These numbers are averages. Your body may be slower.
The morning-after risk
Many drivers are caught the next morning. After a late night, alcohol can still be above 30 mg/100 ml at 8 or 9 AM, even if you feel fine. Feeling sober is not the same as being under the limit.
Myths that do not work
- Black coffee: makes you alert, not sober
- Mouthwash or a mouth spray: can raise a breath reading, never lower it
- Eating after drinking: slows absorption a little, does not remove alcohol
- Sleeping for a few hours: helps only if enough hours pass
Check, do not guess
A personal breath alcohol tester tells you your level in a few seconds. Test before you drive, and if it shows any alcohol, wait and test again. Know what the numbers mean in our guide to normal breath alcohol range and the drink and drive limit in India.
