By when you are testing
Pre-shift alcohol testing on a construction site
Pre-shift testing is a throughput problem: every worker, at one gate, in the few minutes before a shift starts. A non-contact unit does that without a mouthpiece for each worker, with one printing unit kept aside for anyone it flags.

Every figure here is read from the product's own page. Where a product does not publish a number, this table says so rather than estimating it.
Which one
- AX5— The least expensive non-contact unit; one gate, one device.
- A-18 Rapid— Reads to 400 mg/100mL, the widest range of the semiconductor units here.
- A15 Blue— A step up from the AX5 for a busier gate.
- AT-7000— Fuel cell, reading in under a second.
Sizing it to the crew
A small crew at a single gate is served by the AX5. Two gates or a shift change is where the A-18 Rapid and A15 Blue earn their price, and the Rapid reads to 400 mg/100mL. Where readings are written into a register, the AT-7000 is the one to buy: a fuel cell sensor drifts less than a semiconductor one between recalibrations.
Keep a record for the exceptions
None of the units on this page print. An A-23 alongside them does, and that is the usual pairing — screen everybody at the gate, print a record only for the workers the screen flags.
Questions
- How long does testing a crew take?
- The non-contact units here read in under five seconds and the AT-7000 in under one, after a short warm-up. The gate, not the device, is usually what sets the pace.
- Why is the AT-7000 several times the price of the AX5?
- The sensor. A fuel cell drifts less than a semiconductor sensor over repeated tests. Both are recalibrated; the semiconductor units need it sooner.
- Does a non-contact unit need a mouthpiece for each worker?
- No, which is the reason to use one at a gate.
- Which of these print a result?
- None of them. The A-23 prints and is the usual unit kept alongside for anyone the screen flags.
- Can you supply several sites?
- Yes. Send the number of gates and we will quote.
